The present volume is the first publishing product of a decade-long development focused on the study of spoken discourse at the Institute of Modern Greek Studies. It comprises 18 papers on the use of Modern Greek in spoken communication, and covers a wide array of linguistic phenomena which – irrespective of the specific linguistic means with which they are instantiated – can be subsumed under the following broad categories: the structure and organization of conversation, negotiation and disagreement, repetition-reformulation, the construction of identities/collectivities.

A common feature of the papers in the volume is the grounding of their findings in authentic, natural data from a variety of interactional settings. For the most part, the authors draw on informal, everyday conversations among friends and relatives, but the volume also includes studies whose empirical basis derives from institutional contexts, such as television broadcasts, interviews, focus groups, etc. Moreover, most papers are clearly oriented towards a qualitative methodology, though not necessarily departing from the same theoretical premises. These two features, combined with the number of the studies on – and in – Modern Greek, make up the uniqueness of the present volume.

The book’s editor, Th.-S. Pavlidou, is professor emerita at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
