Ομηρικές μελέτες [Homeric studies]
Chr. Tsagalis
The book collects studies of Chr. Tsagalis published in internationally acclaimed peer-reviewed journals and monographs during 2008-2016. The author aims at bridging the ‘Great Divide’ separating the supporters of an oral versus a literate Homer, by engaging himself in a fertile dialogue with first-rank Homerists, like Gregory Nagy, Egbert Bakker, Pietro Pucci, Jonathan Burgess, Margalit Finkelberg, Wolfgang Kullmann, and Georg Danek.
The author systematically argues in favor of a synthetic approach to oral theory and neoanalysis, on a methodological-theoretical level (chapters 1-2) and on the level of interpretation of selected passages (chapters 3-7) or specific features of the epic code (chapters 8-12). The result is a cohesive presentation, for the first time in the Greek language, of the status quaestionis in Homeric research on an international level, to which the author participates with a strong and clear voice, as one can see through his work on exploring the relations between the Iliad and the Theban Epic Cycle (chapters 2, 9) and the pre-Homeric, alternative versions of Odyssean epic (chapters 5, 6, 7, 10), i.e. of two topics that traditional neoanalysis had until now rather neglected.
Chr. Tsagalis is professor of Ancient Greek Literature at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.Full title | Ομηρικές μελέτες [Homeric studies] |
