This collective work seeks to present an overview of contemporary thinking on language and gender issues in relation to the Greek language. The book's point of departure is the social problem of sexism and the dialectical relationship between language and society, that is, the linguistic premise that language does not only passively reflect social structure, but is also actively involved in its constitution, and, consequently, in the production and reproduction of social inequalities and the ideologies that sustain them.

The book attempts to reveal the role that language plays in sustaining and reproducing power relations between the two sexes as well as other inequalities in Greek society. Additionally, it contains an extensive reference list, indices of names as well as an appendix containing the transcription symbols used in the text.

The book’s editor, Th.-S. Pavlidou, is professor emerita at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
