Δημοτική και νομικά [Demotic Greek and the Law]

This volume contains reprints of Christophoros Christidis’ Prefaces to six basic legal texts which the author adapted to Demotic Greek: the Civil Code, the 1952 Constitution, the 1971 Civil Procedure Code, the 1950 Penal Code, the 1975 Constitution and the 1950 Civil Procedure Code. In the Preface to the Civil Code, in particular, Christidis gives an extensive account of how he coped with practical issues regarding the adaptation of the texts in Katharevousa to Demotic. Of the Prefaces, those sections that focus on non-linguistic issues (legal issues, views on the political life of the time, etc.) have been omitted.

The author, an Athens lawyer, was himself an active demoticist and M. Triandaphyllidis’ will writing consultant. He worked with great zeal for 22 years (until his death) as the Institute’s trustee.
