This book comprises two translated essays by Stylianos G. Kapsomenos, first written in German. The first one, entitled “H ελληνική γλώσσα από τα ελληνιστικά ως τα νεότερα χρόνια” [The Greek language from the Hellenistic period to modern times], is a paper that the author presented at the 11th International Congress of Byzantine studies (Munich 1958). The second essay, entitled “H ελληνική γλώσσα στην Aίγυπτο” [The Greek language in Egypt], is the author’s presentation at the 7th International Congress of Papyrology (Geneva 1952). The first essay begins with an overview of the studies on the Greek language of the Post-Classical, Medieval and Modern Greek periods, presents the related bibliography, and discusses the course of research regarding Hellenistic Koine, the study of papyri, the language of the Old and the New Testament, Medieval and Modern Greek (phonetics, morphology, syntax, lexicon, dialects, etc.). The second essay examines the Greek language as it was spoken in Egypt in the Hellenistic period.

S. G. Kapsomenos served as professor at the Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and as a member of the Institute’s Board of Directors.
