The term γραμματισμός has been used for several years now in the Greek literature in place of the older term αλφαβητισμός, but is broader in scope. It denotes not only the ability to read and write, but also the ability to comprehend, produce and critically appraise various types of spoken and written texts depending on the communicative circumstances.

The present volume brings together five pivotal articles by J. P. Gee, G. Wells, R. Hasan and C. Luke, which, in contrast to traditional approaches, examine literacy in the context of social practices, underscore the interplay between society and school practice, discuss attitudes and seek new definitions so that literacy can be about the production and not the reproduction of knowledge. Finally, they investigate new needs that arise as a result of the dissemination and use of new technologies regarding school education and literacy. The titles of the articles are indicative: “Literacy and the literacy myth: From Plato to Freire”, “The New Literary Studies: Sociocultural approaches to language and literacy”, “Language, literacy and education”, “Literacy, every day talk and society”, “Cyber-schooling and technological change: multiliteracies for new time”.

A. Charalambopoulos, who served as associate professor at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, selected the articles and edited the translation.
