The book offers readers a first glance at the field of linguistic pragmatics, functioning, at the same time, as an effective introductory textbook to its teaching. It is part of the series of introductory linguistic textbooks published by Oxford University Press. The series aims to provide an outline of the individual fields in the study of language for readers with no specialized knowledge of linguistics.

The book also includes original excerpts from pragmatics studies which played a key role in the development of the field as well as exercises on the more specialized issues raised by the specific texts. The author’s main aim is to approach the issues under discussion from the same perspective, which reflects the central concern of pragmatics: namely, that in linguistic communication the sense of what is said is rarely restricted to what the words and their combinations mean.

George Yule, author of, inter alia, Focus on the Language Learner (1989) and Explaining English Grammar (1999), taught Applied Linguistics at the universities of Edinburgh, Hawaii, Louisiana and Minnesota. The book’s translation was edited by Th.-S. Pavlidou, professor emerita at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
