The book seeks to tell the story of Ancient Greek in a simple (yet, not simplistic) manner. In essence, it more or less covers the whole spectrum of the history of the Greek language, from its prehistory to the present day, unraveling, with remarkable clarity, the secrets of the language and of the script in particular by focusing not only on factual information but also on the mechanisms that produce and impart meaning to it.

At the same time, the book, in a dispassionate and scientifically informed fashion, sheds light on pathological aberrations in the history of the Greek language. Modern Greek is constantly present. And that’s because it is the language that is spoken and used in contemporary Modern Greek society. This experience is invaluable in enabling students, but also any reader, to perceive similarities and differences in relation to the linguistic reality of a distant past. Such similarities and differences help raise awareness as to the big ‘secret’ of language: its social character, as it presents itself and functions through historical time. Exercises, illustrations, text excerpts, and a reference list complete the account.

The author taught Linguistics at the School of Philology, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
