The book has rightfully been described by both Greek and foreign classical philologists as the most comprehensive introductory textbook on Ancient Greek metre, and anyone who masters its content will know everything they need to know in order to approach ancient Greek poetry, both the one sung and the one recited, from its origins to the 7rh century AD. This is the abridged version of a much longer work by the same author entitled Greek metre. The book begins with an introduction on the nature of Ancient Greek metre and a chapter on prosody, and then moves on to examine and present, in a detailed fashion, all the metre types of epic, lyric and dramatic poetry from Homer to Georgios Pisidis. The Greek translation incorporates additions and improvements into the English text, with a special focus on issues of terminology.

Professor M. L. West (1937-2015) was acknowledged as the most brilliant and productive Greek scholar of his generation, not just in the United Kingdom, but worldwide. He has published the Iliad, the complete works of Hesiod and Aeschylus, as well as anthologies of lyric poets, both of iambic and elegiac verse. He has also written numerous articles on Ancient Greek metre, a textbook on textual criticism and editorial technique as well as an extensive study on Ancient Greek music.
