The aim of this book, as defined by the author himself in his introduction, “is to formulate the metrical rules of Modern Greek as simply and clearly as possible based on an objective examination of Modern Greek metrical phenomena, to discuss the nature of Modern Greek verse forms, as these have evolved in folk song and personal poetry, and to classify them on the basis of their main features, which are, first, rhythm, and secondly, of lesser significance, the number of their syllables. The author also wishes to provide readers with the necessary information about rhyme, stanza systems, and poems which present a steady form.”

In the beginning of the book, some general information about verse forms, hiatus, alliteration etc. is given. Then, the author discusses every form of verse individually, analyses the systems of rhyme and the types of stanzas, always with the aid of hundreds of examples taken from the leading representatives of Modern Greek poetry. This is the most significant book written about Modern Greek metre, a necessary aid to philologists, but also to anyone seriously involved in poetry.

Th. Stavrou was a close friend and invaluable associate of Manolis Triandaphyillidis. His rich work revolves around three interrelated creative spaces: teaching practice, philological popularization and literary translation.
