More than 55 years after C.D. Buck’s classic work The Greek Dialects (1955), this collective volume aims to present the findings of current research in the field of Ancient Greek dialectology, but also add a new dimension to it: namely, the study of Ancient Greek and its dialects through the lens of Medieval and Modern Greek dialects. The world’s most established specialists in the field of Ancient Greek dialectology, language and philology contribute to this work. The volume, approximately 800 pages in size, will include a review of research so far, the historical evolution, the contacts and the classification of Ancient Greek dialects, a detailed presentation of their grammar as well as a comprehensive description and analysis of individual geographical dialects (e.g., the dialects of Argolida, Arcadia, Achaea, Voiotia, Thessaly etc.), but also the literary dialects and social varieties of Greek from antiquity to the Hellenistic period. The book will also include an extensive bibliography, examples of ancient dialectal texts, detailed indices of terms and objects, detailed maps, etc.
