The Institute of Modern Greek Studies (Manolis Triandaphyllidis Foundation) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki has been awarded the Gold Medal, the highest distinction offered by the Academy of Athens, for its contribution to the language and education of the Greek people for the past fifty five years.

The award ceremony was held during the formal sitting of December 19, 2014 at the Ceremony Hall of the Academy, and the Gold Medal was received by the President of the Institute’s Board of Directors, G. M. Parassoglou, Professor Emeritus at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

The Academy of Athens chose to award the Gold Medal to one of the country’s most important research and scientific institutions in the field of humanities, which, through its multifaceted work and activity in the past fifty-five years, has contributed to the education of the Greek people, adhering to the principles and the teachings of Manolis Triandaphyllidis.

According to the specifications set in M. Triandaphyllidis' will and in the Institution's Founding Act, the activities of the Institute include: the theoretical and applied, disciplinary and interdisciplinary research in the fields of Greek language and philology; the synchronic and diachronic study of the Greek language; the implementation of short- and long-term research projects as well as the publication of scientific studies pertaining to the Greek language and literature; the reinforcement of the teaching of the Greek language, both as a native language and as a second or foreign one, as well as the promotion of the Greek language abroad; the Institute's collaboration with foundations, institutions and various organizations of the same or similar scientific interest, in Greece, in the European Union or in other countries, and the Institute’s participation in research projects implemented by these agencies; the organization of conferences, scientific symposiums, lectures, workshops, seminars and various other activities pertaining to the Institute's object of inquiry as well as the publication of their findings. Finally, according to its founder’s will, the Institute aims to promote the education of the Greek people by whatever means available.

The members of the Board and the staff of the Institute of Modern Greek Studies wish to thank the Academy of Athens for this great honor. We also wish to thank all those individuals who served the Institute these fifty-five years and have contributed, each from their own post, to its progress. We also fondly remember those who are no longer with us. Finally, we feel the need to thank the Institute’s friends, in Greece and abroad, who supported and continue to support us in our effort to be at the forefront of research into Greek language and literature, which was so graciously and generously acknowledged and honored by the Academy of Athens.
