Greek language event

Municipal Library of Kavala, Kavala

The Group for the Spreading of the Greek Language of Kavala, in collaboration with the Municipality of Kavala, organized an event about the Greek language, in which the Institute of Modern Greek Studies also participated. The event took place at the Municipal Library of Kavala, on April 3, 2017, at 18:00.
 

Presentation of the book "N. Paraskevopoulos, Οι μέλισσες και οι λύκοι [The bees and the wolves]"

On February 10th, 2017, at 7.00 p.m., Nikos Paraskevopoulos' book "The bees and the wolves: studies in the history of Greek law" was presented at the Auditorium of the Acropolis Museum, 15 Areopagitou str., Athens.

Christmas Book Bazaar 2016

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies organized a "Christmas Book Bazaar" on December 15th and 16th, 2016 (10:00-15.00), at the New Building of the Faculty of Philosophy. Recent and older publications were available to all the members of the university community at special prices.

1st International Conference on Language Contact in the Balkans and Asia Minor

Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation, A.U.Th., Thessaloniki

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies (M. Triandaphyllidis Foundation), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, organized the “2nd International Conference on Language Contact in the Balkans and Asia Minor”, on 3-5 November 2016, in Thessaloniki. The conference investigated language contact in the Balkans and Asia Minor, with a special focus on the relationship between Greek and other languages in these regions.

Keynote speakers: professors Bernt Brendemoen (Universitetet i Oslo) and Klaus Steinke (Universität Erlangen), leading scholars on issues related to language contact in the conference’s focus areas. In addition, internationally acclaimed scholars such as Brian Joseph (Ohio State University, Columbus), Matthias Kappler (Università Ca’Foscari, Venezia), Irena Sawicka (Polska Akademia Nauk, Warszawa), Andrej Sobolev (Universität Marburg) participated in the conference.

Symposium "Questions-answers in Greek Talk-in-interaction"

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies [Manolis Triandaphyllidis Foundation] of the A.U.Th. organized its 2nd Symposium on the Greek Language in Spoken Communication, held in Thessaloniki, at the Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation, on 13-14 October 2016. The Symposium was organized as part of the Institute’s activities on spoken Greek and in the context of the research project Greek Talk-in-interaction and Conversation Analysis. The topic of the Symposium was Questions-answers in Greek Talk-in-interaction.

The aim of the Symposium was to examine systematically aspects of this nuclear sequence in Greek talk-in-interaction both in everyday conversations and in more institutional settings. Moreover, the Symposium hosted a session on questions-answers in other languages, so that discussion of the Greek data can be set in the cross-linguistic perspective of talk-in-interaction. The keynote speaker of the Symposium was Professor Marja-Leena Sorjonen (University of Helsinki), Director of the Finnish Center of Excellence in Intersubjectivity and Interaction.

Major Teacher Training Program

The Education Department of the Greek Community of Melbourne and Victoria (headed by Manos Tzimpragos, principal of the Greek Community Language Schools, together with Vicky Marinelis, Senior Officer at the Department of Education and Training of Victoria), in collaboration with the Institute of Modern Greek Studies, organized a Teacher Training Program from September 19 to 29, 2016, at the Greek Centre, 168 Lonsdale Str, Melbourne, Australia.

The Faculty of Philosophy, A.U.Th.: from the present to the past and the future

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies participated in the 90-year anniversary of the Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, organized by the Deanship, at the Ceremony Hall of the Faculty of Philosophy, on Monday June 27th, 2016, at 6.30.

Speakers: the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy D. Mavroskoufis "The Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki: a bicyclist in the universe of science", the Head of the School of German Language and Literature A. Koiliari "Foreign languages - foreign civilizations in the Faculty of Philosophy: a window on openness, intercultural understanding and communication", and the director of the Institute of Modern Greek Studies G. Papanastassiou "The Faculty of Philosophy, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and the History of the Greek language".

Seminar for Teachers of Primary Education

13th Thessaloniki International Book Fair

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies participated in the 13th International Book Fair of Thessaloniki, held from May 12th to May 15th, 2016, at the Helexpo Exhibition Center (Pavilion 13, stand 85). The 13th Book Fair was dedicated to the "Refugees, then and now". The Country of Honor was Russia.

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies supported the "2nd Language Competition LexiGame", held on April 21st, 2016 at the 1st Pilot High School of Thessaloniki "M. Andronikos". The 1st Pilot High School of Thessaloniki and the Pilot High School of the University of Macedonia took part in the competition.

1st International Conference on Greek Etymology

Teloglion Fine Arts Foundation, A.U.Th., Thessaloniki

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies (M. Triandaphyllidis Foundation), Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, organized the “1st International Conference on Greek Etymology (Ancient, Medieval and Modern)”, on 5-6 November 2015.

The conference examined theoretical and practical aspects of etymological issues related to the Greek language, covering all its historical periods and varieties (both dialectal and standard). Similar issues regarding the Balkan area more broadly were also addressed, with a special focus on the etymological investigation of elements of the Greek language in other languages of the Balkans.

Thematic areas, among others: (a) theoretical aspects of Greek etymology, (b) etymological suggestions regarding Ancient, Medieval and Modern Greek words, (c) etymology and dialectology, (d) etymology and language contact, (e) etymology and philology (text reconstruction, pre-scientific etymology), and (f) etymology and education.
