Teaching of Modern Greek as a foreign language in Egypt

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies  participated in the event hold on February 6, 2019, at 18:00, at the National Translation Centre of Egypt, at the Cairo Opera House. The event was hosted by the Alexandria branch of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, in the context of the 50th International Cairo Book Fair.
 

Professors teaching at the Greek Departments of the Universities of Egypt attended the event. On behalf of the Institute, the director G. Papanastassiou and the Institute’s associate P. Andreou talked about the methods of teaching Greek as a second/foreign language, as well as about Institute’s publishing experience in the field of language teaching. The presentation was followed by a useful discussion on the particular needs and problems of the people who teach the Greek language in Egypt, as well as on the ways in which the Institute, in cooperation with the Hellenic Foundation for Culture, could contribute to better addressing these needs.

To this end, the Institute offered books to the libraries of the Egyptian Universities that teach Modern Greek and, additionally, Dr. Halend Rauf, associate of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture in Alexandria, was commissioned to translate Manolis Triandaphyllidis’ Concise Modern Greek Grammar into Arabic.
