8th Thessaloniki International Bookfair

Pavilions 13 and 15, Helexpo, Thessaloniki

The Institute of Modern Greek Studies participated in the 8th Thessaloniki International Bookfair, held from 5 until 8 May 2011, which was hosted on the Helexpo premises in Thessaloniki.

At the same time, the Institute participated in the Thessaloniki International Book Fair with the following events:

• an exhibition under the title "School textbooks of the 19th century: From the collection of the Institute of Modern Greek Studies", which was held at Pavilion 13 of the Helexpo International Exhibition Centre. Fifty school textbooks of the 19th and early 20th century were exhibited, which cover most of the courses taught at the time in the country’s primary and secondary schools: Ancient and Modern Greek, mathematics, physics, natural history, anthropology, geography, religion, anthology, metrics, foreign languages, etc. Published in Athens but also in Constantinople, many of these textbooks are rare and some of them unique.

• a 'Spelling Workshop', which was held on Thursday, May 5th, 2011 (17:00-19:00) and on Friday, May 6th, 2011 (19:00-21:00) in Pavilion 13 of the Helexpo International Exhibition Centre.

The workshop was intended for teachers, mainly secondary school teachers, and presented a classification of spelling mistakes, which can be utilized in the classroom, as well as a teaching proposal for the learning of spelling.

It was presented by George Papanastassiou, linguist, director of the Institute, and Eleni-Vaso Melikidou, philologist, associate of the Institute.

a book presentation and a speech:

A. The book presentation was held on Sunday, May 8th, 2011 (14:00-15:00). The following books were presented:

(a) G.K. Giannakis, Historical Linguistics and philology, Thessaloniki, 2011.

(b) C. Knellwolf, C. Norris (eds.), Twentieth-Century historical, philosophical and psychological perspectives, Thessaloniki, 2010.

(c) A. van Gemert (ed.), The badly wedded lady, Thessaloniki, 2010.

(d) C. Luciani (ed.), Katis and the mouse, Thessaloniki, 2011.

The books were presented by George Giannakis, Associate Professor of Linguistics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, George Papanastassiou, Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and director of the Institute, and Angeliki Loudi, Dr. of Philology and researcher at the Institute.

B. The speech by Dimitris Koutsogiannis, Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, entitled "The impact of the book Η Γλώσσα μου on the teaching of our language", was held on Sunday, May 8th, 2011 (15:00-16:00).

Professor Koutsogiannis discussed the impact that the textbook Η Γλώσσα μου (written by M. Oikonomou, Th. Stavrou and M. Triandaphyllidis) had on the writing of school textbooks for the teaching of language, ever since it was first published in 1955.
