Seeing Books Differently...

May 3rd, 2011
Navarino Square, Thessaloniki

The group «Thessaloniki Allios» ('a Different Thessaloniki') and the Institute of Modern Greek Studies co-organized an informal workshop dedicated to children entitled «Seeing Books Differently», as part of the 8th International Bookfair. The event was held on 3 May 2011 at the Navarino Square, Thessaloniki.

The three activities organized were the following:

(1) The word hunt. The kids looked up words given by the coordinator in the Dictionary of Standard Modern Greek.

(2) What else is in a dictionary? The kids went through the Inflection Tables of the Dictionary of Standard Modern Greek to find out how the words given by the coordinator are inflected.

(3) Can you form words? With the aid of the Dictionary, the kids were asked to look up compound words formed by the first parts given by the coordinator.

All three language games were intended mainly for students of the 5th and 6th grade of elementary school, which were divided into groups.

The aim of the games was to familiarize students with the process of looking up words in a dictionary (by helping them foster their team spirit), and, more generally, with how dictionaries are utilized (lexicographical awareness).

The winners of the games and all the participants were given publications of the Institute for free.
