For the first time in the history of our state education, this textbook fills a gap in students’ knowledge of antiquity: the role the Romans played in the constitution and in the tradition of classical education. In a fascinating manner, the author discusses the affinities between the Roman and the Greek world as well as their historical continuity. He presents the points of convergence and divergence between the two poles of classical humanitarianism, mainly in terms of politics and culture. On the basis of perfectly accurate information, often derived from rare sources, the author successfully creates an enchanting fiction of the Roman world and its culture, in which resourcefulness, humor and imagination mutually complement each other. In brief, in this textbook austere philology reconciles with delightful philology.

The book is divided into fifteen chapters and ends with a table of Rome’s most important historical events. In terms of place, the book focuses mainly on Rome. In terms of time, as the reader will discover, there is a thin chronological thread (from the beginnings of Roman history, say sometime in the 8th century BC, until the division of the empire into its eastern and western parts and the final dissolution of the western part in the 5th century BC).

Th. Papanghelis is professor of Latin Literature at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
