The book presents the evolution of philosophical thought from the 6th century BC to the 6th century AD in the Greek-speaking world of the time. The authors succeed in bringing to the fore the dominant issues addressed by the most important philosophical schools of antiquity, employing every instructive means available, from the analytic presentation and reconstruction of arguments to the creation of imaginary dialogues and letters between ancient philosophers.

In a style that varies depending on the author and the object of analysis, each one of the book’s 16 chapters creates the image of a philosopher or philosophical school. The presentation in chronological order was deemed necessary in order both to demonstrate the continuity of philosophical thought (that is, to make the transition from one philosopher to another and from one period to another clear), and to facilitate the understanding of the historical context of a philosophy such as the Ancient Greek one, which was or sought to be inextricably bound to action. The authors, in a familiar and fascinating fashion, acquaint students, but also anyone who believes that “they are never immature or too mature for whatever brings health to the mind and soul”, with the individuals who posed the questions and led their lives according to the answers they gave to those questions.

Vassilis Kalfas and Giorgos Zographidis both teach Philosophy at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
