Αλέξανδρος Δελμούζος, Ανάλεκτα [Alexandros Delmouzos, Analects]

This edition, originally designed by A. Dimaras but left unfinished, brings together 67 of A. Delmouzos’ articles on language and education, which cover a broad time span, from 1907 to 1954. The cornerstone of Delmouzos’ thought and action was his belief that the learning of language, and particularly the learning of dimotiki, was an indispensable tool for the promotion of a ‘nobler’ cause, the establishment of folk national education. According to Delmouzos, “language is not a goal in itself but a resource, a means to people’s communication and education. We do not exist in order to serve language, we create it so that it serves us. And the best language for us is the one that serves us better; and living people are better served only with a living language. This is the mirror to our soul” (Bulletin of the Educational Society, 1911).

The edition is supplemented with introductory texts by H. Athanassiadi (historian of Education at the University of Ioannina) and A. Frangoudaki (Professor Emeritus of the University of Athens), a Chronological Table of Delmouzos’ life and a contribution to his List of Works.

The book is jointly published by the Institute of Modern Greek Studies and the Society for the Study of Modern Greek Culture and General Education (Founded by Moraitis School).
